Kitesurfing at Carenero

Carenero is the main kitesurfing area in Los Roques, a flat lagoon between cays where the consistent northeast trade winds create textbook conditions. The water is knee-to-waist deep over a sandy bottom for long distances, making it ideal for beginners learning to control a kite. Several schools operate from Gran Roque and offer multi-day courses for all levels.

The conditions run reliably from December through August, with the strongest and most consistent winds in January through March. Outside those months the winds are lighter and less predictable but still adequate for experienced riders. Equipment rental is available. The setting — warm, transparent water, empty beaches, no boats — is exceptional.

A story
Los Roques has become one of the world's top kitesurfing destinations because of a geographical accident: the trade winds blow consistently from the northeast across the flat lagoon waters between the cays, creating ideal conditions for beginners and experts alike. Venezuelan and international kitesurfing schools have been operating here since the early 2000s, and the flat water conditions attract competitive riders from around the world for annual events.
