Plaza Monumental de Toros de Pueblo Nuevo

The Plaza Monumental de Toros de Pueblo Nuevo is Venezuela's premier bullring, with capacity for 15,000 spectators. Built in 1967 to a design by Eduardo Santos Castillo, it becomes the focal point of the city every January during the Feria de San Sebastián — the largest fair in Venezuela and one of the most important taurine events in Latin America.

Outside fair season the arena hosts concerts and other events. Even if bullfighting is not your interest, the sheer scale of the structure and its place in Táchira's civic identity makes it worth understanding as you walk around the city. The Pueblo Nuevo neighbourhood around it has a working-class vitality very different from the colonial center.

A story
Venezuela's taurine tradition is strongest in the Andean states, and San Cristóbal's January fair is the peak of the country's bullfighting calendar. The inaugural corrida in 1967 featured four of the era's top matadors — Antoñete, Curro Girón, Paco Camino, and El Pireo — turning what was a regional event into a nationally significant one from the very start.
