San Cristóbal sits at 860 metres above sea level in the Andes, which gives it a comfortable temperate climate year-round — warm days and cool nights, with none of the oppressive heat of Venezuela's lowlands. Temperatures range from around 16°C to 26°C through the year.
The most important event in the local calendar is the Feria de San Sebastián, held every January around the feast day of St. Sebastian. This is the largest fair in Venezuela — a week-plus of bullfights at the Plaza Monumental, concerts, parades, and general festivity that draws visitors from across the country and from Colombia. The city fills up completely and accommodation is hard to find; book months ahead if you plan to visit during the fair.
The dry season runs roughly from December to April, which coincides with the fair period and is generally the best time to visit. May to November brings more rain but the city remains pleasant and functional.
