The Estadio José Bernardo Pérez is the principal sporting venue of Valencia, used for baseball — the dominant sport here — and football. The stadium opened in 1955 and has been renovated several times; current capacity is around sixteen thousand, with floodlights that make for raucous evening fixtures.
The local baseball side, the Navegantes del Magallanes, share the stadium and have a long rivalry with Caracas's Leones, one of the great fixtures of Venezuelan sport. Tickets are inexpensive, the atmosphere is friendly, and the food and beer on offer in the stands are part of the experience. Check the local press for fixtures; the regular season runs October to January.
