Plaza de Toros Monumental

Imposing modernist bullring, the largest in Venezuela

The Plaza de Toros Monumental de Valencia is the largest bullring in Venezuela and one of the largest in Latin America, with capacity for more than twenty-five thousand spectators. The arena was inaugurated in 1968 and is built in a stripped, modernist version of Spanish plaza de toros architecture — a circular drum of pale concrete with a series of arched entrances and concrete bullhorns above the gates.

Bullfighting in Venezuela is in long decline and the schedule of corridas is much thinner than it once was, but the building itself is a striking piece of mid-century civic architecture worth a look from the outside. The surrounding Recinto Ferial hosts the annual Feria de Valencia in November, the city's biggest party — bull-related events, concerts, food and craft stalls, and a parade through the centre.
