Things to Do

Béjaïa's most accessible sight is the old city, where Ottoman-era buildings mix with French colonial architecture on steep streets above the port. The Casbah district retains some of its character, though it is less preserved than Algiers' famous Casbah. The archaeological museum holds Roman and medieval finds from Saldae, the ancient port city that preceded Béjaïa on this site.

The surrounding landscape is the real draw: the Gouraya National Park immediately northwest of the city combines a limestone cape with Mediterranean scrubland, Barbary macaque habitat, and views across the Gulf of Béjaïa. The Pic des Singes (Monkeys' Peak) is the most visited point in the park, reached by a road with switchbacks above the city.
