Musée de la Wilaya de Biskra

The regional museum of Biskra occupies a building in the city centre and holds a compact but worthwhile collection covering the Ziban region from prehistory through the Ottoman period. Roman artefacts dominate the archaeological displays — Biskra was the Roman town of Vescera, an important military post on the desert frontier, and finds from around the province include inscriptions, ceramics, and coins. Ethnographic displays document traditional Berber life: jewellery, textiles, agricultural tools, and the material culture of the palm oasis settlements.

The museum is small and can be seen in under an hour, but it provides useful context before exploring the wider region. Staff are generally welcoming to foreign visitors, and some have enough French to give informal commentary. Ask about the collection related to Étienne Dinet, the French orientalist painter who lived in the nearby town of Bou Saâda and whose work is closely associated with this region.
