Bab Essebt

The only surviving Ottoman gate of the old city walls

Bab Essebt — the "Saturday Gate," named for the weekly market that used to be held outside it — is the only one of the seven Ottoman gates of Blida still standing in anything like its original form. The horseshoe-arched stone gateway, embedded in a stretch of restored wall, dates from the 16th-century foundation of the city.

The gate has been heavily restored, and the surrounding area is now an ordinary residential and commercial quarter rather than the edge of a walled town. Even so, the contrast between the Ottoman gateway and the French-era streetscape around it is a fair summary of Blida's layered history. The gate sits a few blocks west of the Place des Martyrs.
