Cherchell Harbour

The small working harbour at the northern edge of town. Fishing boats come and go through the morning, and the waterfront is a pleasant place to sit after a morning in the museum. A few informal fish restaurants operate nearby, serving the day's catch simply grilled or fried.

The harbour itself sits on top of the ancient Roman port — one of the most important on the Mauretanian coast — though little of the Roman infrastructure is visible today. The modern town follows the same basic outline as its ancient predecessor, which gives even the unremarkable streets a quiet historical weight.
