The royal necropolis of the Beni Djellab dynasty stands on the edge of the old ksar — a cluster of domed mausolea built in sand-coloured brick, each marking the grave of one of the sultans who ruled this corner of the Sahara before the French conquest. The largest dome belongs to Sultan Salim, who built the great mosque next to the tombs.
The site is rarely visited and the tombs are partly ruined, but the small enclosure of domes against the desert sky is one of the most photogenic spots in southern Algeria. The adjacent Sidi Salim mosque is still in use.
