Touggourt's interest lies in its position on the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental and in the surviving fabric of its old ksar. The town is far enough off the main tourist routes that few foreigners get here, which is part of the appeal. A day or two is enough to see the old quarter, the royal tombs, and the date palmeries, before heading on to El Oued or south into the desert.
