Eating Out

Benguela's food scene is better than Angola's reputation suggests. Fresh seafood is the thing to eat — the Benguela Current makes this one of the richest fishing coasts in Africa, and the local cooks know what to do with it. Look for grilled fish served with funge (cassava paste), moamba de peixe (fish in palm oil and okra sauce), and caldeirada (fish stew in the Portuguese style). There are proper restaurants in the city centre as well as simple seafood grills near the waterfront and on the road to Baía Azul.
