Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo is the main Catholic church of Benguela's colonial centre, a whitewashed Baroque structure that has been rebuilt and restored several times since the original 17th-century construction. It faces a pleasant square in the old town and is still an active parish church.

The interior has some interesting ecclesiastical art and a calm atmosphere that makes it worth stepping inside for a few minutes. The church square is a good starting point for a walk through the colonial grid of streets surrounding it — the mix of preserved facades, occupied ruins, and new construction tells you a great deal about the pace of Angola's reconstruction.

A story
This is one of the oldest churches in Angola, originally built in the 17th century around the same time as the fort. It was the church of the colonial settlement and served a congregation that included Portuguese merchants, their enslaved domestic workers, and the growing community of mixed-heritage Angolans who would later form the backbone of Benguela's Creole culture.
