Waterfront Promenade

The renovated seafront promenade is where Benguela comes to walk, sit, and watch the ocean. The wide esplanade runs along the waterfront and is lined with benches, palms, and food stalls that set up in the evenings. At sunset, when the light turns the ocean gold and the fishing boats come in, it's one of the more pleasant places to be in any Angolan city.

The promenade connects the old town with the beach areas to the south and is the social centre of the city in a way that civic spaces rarely are in West and Central African port cities. Bring a few kwanzas for a cold Cuca beer from one of the vendors.

A story
The promenade was one of the first major public works completed in Benguela after the end of Angola's civil war in 2002. The renovation of a colonial-era seafront into a proper public space was seen as a symbol of normalcy returning — families walking along the water on weekend evenings was something that simply hadn't been possible for decades during the fighting.
