Artisanal Fishing Community

The beach just south of where the river meets the sea is the heart of Catumbela's fishing community. Each morning, small wooden boats are hauled out with the night's catch — mostly sea bream, mackerel, and the occasional kingfish — and sorted on the sand while nets are mended and spread to dry. It is the most animated scene in the town, loud with the calls of fishermen and the inevitable crowd of buyers. Visitors are generally welcomed as long as they stay out of the way; a small purchase from one of the women selling dried fish nearby goes a long way.
