Catumbela sits in Angola's central coast zone, which has a tropical climate moderated by the cold Benguela Current. That current keeps temperatures lower than you'd expect at this latitude — daytime highs rarely break 28°C even in the hottest months — and produces a persistent morning mist that usually burns off by mid-morning.
The dry season runs from May to October and is the most comfortable time to visit. Skies are clear, humidity drops, and the heat stays manageable. June and July are peak months for birdwatching at the river estuary, when European migrants join resident species on the mudflats.
The wet season (November to April) brings rain mostly in short afternoon bursts. Roads can deteriorate, and the town loses some of its charm in heavy downpours. February and March are the wettest months. Even in the wet season temperatures remain warm, and the landscape around the river turns noticeably greener.
The Benguela Current also drives good fishing year-round, but local fishermen say the coolest months — July and August — bring the best sardine runs close to shore.
