Catumbela River Estuary

The mouth of the Catumbela River is one of the most rewarding spots on Angola's central coast for birdwatching. The estuarine wetlands draw flamingos, herons, and migrating waders, particularly during the southern hemisphere summer when European migrants arrive. At low tide the exposed mudflats become a feeding ground that's hard to match anywhere along this stretch of coast. Local fishermen work the shallows from dugout canoes early in the morning, and the combination of wildlife, water, and working boats makes this an easy few hours.
