Tchitundu-Hulu

Tchitundu-Hulu is a rock-art complex in the wider Namibe desert region, often paired with Iona routes because it sits in the same remote southern landscape. The site includes paintings and petroglyphs on and around granite outcrops, with geometric forms and animal figures that point to a much older human presence in this harsh country.

It deserves care. Do not touch the art, walk over engraved surfaces, or treat the rocks as a casual picnic spot. Go with local guidance if possible, both to find the site and to understand why this exposed archaeological landscape is so fragile.

A story
Tchitundu-Hulu's engravings and paintings have been debated for decades: their age, makers, and meanings remain uncertain. That uncertainty is part of the power of the place, but it also makes preservation urgent because exposed rock art can be damaged by erosion, animals, and careless visitors.
