Kissama is most easily reached as an extended day trip or two-day excursion from Luanda. The drive south on the EN-100 coastal road takes about an hour and a half in good conditions, crossing the Kwanza River at Barra do Kwanza. The park entrance is on the south side of the bridge.
Independent travel is theoretically possible — the park gate is open during daylight hours and entrance fees are modest — but in practice almost everyone visits through a Luanda-based tour operator or directly with the Kwanza Lodge, both of which arrange the 4x4 vehicle, guide, and park paperwork. Self-driving inside the park without a guide is not recommended; the tracks are poorly marked and rangers will turn you back at the gate if you arrive without local support.
The Luanda–Kissama road is paved and in reasonable condition, but as elsewhere in Angola Sunday traffic returning to the capital in the evening is heavy.
