The Agostinho Neto Mausoleum, formally the Dr. António Agostinho Neto Memorial, is one of Luanda's most impossible-to-ignore landmarks. Its 120-metre concrete spire rises from a large ceremonial campus and commemorates Angola's first president, poet, and independence leader.
The site is more than a silhouette on the skyline. Inside and around the memorial are exhibition spaces, a museum function, documentation areas, and the sarcophagus at the centre of the national story it tells. The architecture is severe and theatrical, and whether you admire it or not, it helps explain the monumental language of post-independence Angola.
