Igreja da Nazaré

Small 17th-century bayfront church with one of Luanda's loveliest old altars

Igreja da Nazaré is a small colonial church overlooking Luanda Bay, built in the 17th century and still easy to pick out from the waterfront. Its scale is intimate rather than imposing: a simple facade, a small bell tower, and a setting that reminds you how close the old Portuguese city stood to the sea.

The reason to stop is the atmosphere and the interior detail, especially the altar work. It is a short visit, but a good one if you are tracing Luanda's historic churches from the lower town up toward Fortaleza de São Miguel.
