Church of Our Lady of Remedies

Luanda's old cathedral, a compact colonial church still holding its ground downtown

The Church of Our Lady of Remedies is one of the oldest Catholic landmarks in central Luanda. It is not a grand cathedral in the European sense, and that is part of its appeal: a modest white church set among taller modern buildings, with a Baroque profile and a long connection to the city's Portuguese colonial core.

Step inside if the doors are open, but treat it first as a living church rather than a museum. The interior is simple, with an altar and devotional art that make a quiet contrast to the heat, traffic, and new glass towers outside. It pairs naturally with a walk along the Marginal and the old commercial streets below the fortress.
