Ondjiva

Southern Angolan border town and overland waypoint, marked by dry plains and war-scarred provincial history.

Ondjiva is the capital of Cunene province in southern Angola, a small town of around 15,000 people sitting just 42 kilometres from the Namibian border. It is not a place you visit for sightseeing — there is a small church, the ruins of the old governor's palace (destroyed by the South African army during the border war), and not much else.

What Ondjiva offers is a waypoint. If you are crossing between Angola and Namibia overland, this is where you will stop for fuel and supplies. The surrounding region is flat, dry, and sparsely populated, prone to severe flooding in the rainy season. The town bears the scars of decades of civil war and the border conflict, but it is slowly rebuilding.
