The Queve River (known in Portuguese as the Rio Cuvo) meets the Atlantic just north of Porto Amboim, creating an estuary that is worth exploring for its birdlife and the contrast it offers to the open beach. The calm, brackish water shelters a variety of wading birds, kingfishers, and herons, and fishing dugouts move slowly between the mangrove edges in the early morning hours.
The estuary mouth has a small sandy bar that locals use for swimming when conditions are right — the water here is calmer than the open beach and the current is gentler. A walk along the river bank north of the town gives a sense of the wider Angolan coastal landscape: low scrub, red laterite soil, the silhouettes of palms against the sky. This is not a tourist circuit — you will be sharing it with fishermen and the occasional herd of goats.
