The Grande Mosquee de Zongo is the main mosque for Cotonou's Zongo quarter and one of the city's most important Muslim landmarks. The name Zongo, often used in West Africa for stranger or traveller quarters, hints at the neighbourhood's long history of Hausa and wider regional connections.
It is best visited respectfully from the outside unless you know prayer times and local customs. Pair it with a walk through central Cotonou to see a different side of the city from the markets and beachfront.
