Parakou's eating options are functional rather than sophisticated. The city does its own regional cooking well — northern Beninese food is distinct from the coastal cuisine: heavier on yams, millet, and locally raised meat. Street food around the market and the bus station is cheap and filling. A few sit-down restaurants cater to the overlanders and NGO workers who pass through.
