Parakou is not a city you come to for monuments. Its interest lies in everyday life — the noise and colour of the grand marché, the cultural depth of its Bariba and Dendi communities, and the annual Gaani festival that brings the north of Benin alive each September. The surrounding area offers access to cotton country and the first hills of the Atakora to the northwest.
