Gaani Festival

The Gaani is Parakou's defining cultural event and one of the most impressive traditional festivals in northern Benin. Held each September (the exact dates shift with the lunar calendar), it celebrates the Bariba kingdom with three days of horse parades, drumming, dancing, and royal ceremony centred on the residence of the local chief.

The centrepiece is the equestrian display: riders in elaborate embroidered robes and turbans gallop toward the chief's compound in repeated charges, shouting war cries and firing muskets into the air. The event draws participants and spectators from across the Borgou department and beyond. If your visit coincides with the Gaani, nothing else in Parakou will compare — plan your timing around it.

A story
The Gaani is tied to the Bariba kingdom and traces its origins to a 17th-century victory celebration. The horse parade — in which riders dressed in full traditional regalia charge at full gallop toward the king before halting at the last moment — is a display of loyalty and horsemanship that has been performed the same way for centuries.
