Grande Mosquée

The Grande Mosquée is the largest mosque in Parakou and a visible marker of the city's predominantly Muslim character. Islam came to this part of Benin through trade routes from the north, and Parakou's role as a commercial crossroads gave it a significant Muslim community long before the colonial period.

The mosque itself is in the Sudano-Sahelian style common to West African Muslim architecture — flat-roofed, with protruding wooden beams and thick earthen walls that keep the interior cool in the dry-season heat. Non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome to view the exterior and the courtyard outside prayer times; ask permission before entering. The surrounding neighbourhood, with its tea shops and stalls selling prayer beads and embroidered caps, gives a good sense of daily life in the city's Muslim quarter.
