Maun is the gateway town to the delta and the starting point for most trips. It has basic supplies, fuel, and is where you arrange mokoro excursions and safari bookings. The Crocodile Farm and a small game sanctuary on the outskirts are worth a stop if you have time to spare.
The Tsodilo Hills, northwest of the delta, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site with thousands of rock paintings. It is a long drive on sand tracks and requires a 4x4, but the rock art and the stark beauty of the hills rising from the Kalahari make it worthwhile.
