Central Market

The Central Market is the commercial heart of Bujumbura, a sprawling covered market in the city centre where you can find almost anything. Fresh produce, dried fish, spices, fabrics, second-hand clothes, electronics, and household goods all have their sections. The fish market in the morning is particularly lively, with Lake Tanganyika cichlids and dagaa (small dried fish) among the most common offerings.

The market was badly damaged by fire in 2013 and has been rebuilt in a more modern format, but it remains the busiest and most authentic market in the city. Go early in the morning for the best atmosphere. The surrounding streets are thick with traders and vendors spilling out onto the pavements.
