The Regina Mundi Cathedral is the main Catholic cathedral of Bujumbura, a large mid-20th-century building in the southern part of the city centre. It serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Bujumbura, and its Sunday masses are packed and highly musical — the choir is exceptional by any standard, and attending a service is one of the more memorable experiences the city offers.
During the political crises of 2015, the cathedral grounds served as a place of sanctuary and public gathering. The building itself is architecturally unspectacular but the interiors are well maintained, and the contrast between the colonial-era architecture of the surroundings and the vibrant Burundian religious life inside is striking.
