The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is the principal Catholic church of Douala and the seat of the Archdiocese of Douala. The building is a substantial colonial-era structure in a European ecclesiastical style that feels slightly incongruous under the equatorial sun — but this contrast between European form and African setting is part of what makes it interesting.
The cathedral is still an active parish church and hosts services throughout the week. Outside service hours it is open for visitors. The interior is relatively simple, with stained glass and high vaulted ceilings. The cathedral is located in the Bonanjo district, the old administrative centre of German and French Douala, where several other colonial-era administrative buildings still stand in various states of repair.
