La Nouvelle Liberté

Monumental recycled-metal sculpture that became the best-known emblem of Douala's public-art movement.

La Nouvelle Liberté is the most famous single work in Douala's public-art landscape: a towering figure assembled from recycled metal by Joseph-Francis Sumégné in the 1990s. It stands in the middle of a traffic circle, more urban landmark than quiet gallery piece, and that is part of the point.

The sculpture was controversial when it appeared, but it has become one of the city's visual signatures. Visit as part of a broader doual'art circuit, and be careful crossing or photographing near the traffic; this is a working junction, not a pedestrian plaza.
