A short walk from the Royal Palace stands the Grand Mosque, a reminder that the Bamoun court converted to Islam under Sultan Njoya in the early 20th century. The current mosque is a modern white-and-green structure, but it sits on the site where Njoya led the first Bamoun Muslim prayers.
Non-Muslims are not normally admitted to the prayer hall, but the courtyard is welcoming outside prayer times and the building anchors the southern end of the palace-and-artisans district.
