Yaoundé has no metro or light rail. The primary options are taxis (yellow, shared or private hire), motorcycle taxis (moto-taxis, cheap and fast for short distances), and local buses (cheap but crowded and infrequent on many routes).
Shared taxis (taxi-brousse within the city) follow fixed routes and pick up multiple passengers — cheap but slow if you are not going along the main route. Private hire taxis are faster and can be flagged on the street; agree the fare before you get in, as meters are not used. For longer cross-city journeys, this is the most practical option.
Moto-taxis are ubiquitous and useful for short hops across the city's hills, but carry some safety risk — helmets are rarely provided. Walking is feasible in the central areas but Yaoundé's hills make it more tiring than it looks on a map. The city centre itself, around the Hilton and the Plateau district, is walkable.
