The Mvog-Betsi Zoo (Parc Zoo-Botanique de Mvog Betsi) is a combined zoological and botanical park in the western part of the city, the main attraction for families and the closest thing Yaoundé has to a conventional tourist sight for children. The zoo holds gorillas, chimpanzees, mandrills, and other Central African wildlife, alongside the botanical garden's collection of tropical plants.
Conditions at the zoo have improved in recent years following renovations, though by international standards the enclosures remain basic. The presence of gorillas and chimps — animals that are genuinely impressive at close range — makes it worthwhile for wildlife-interested visitors who are not heading to the national parks. Open daily; entrance fees are modest by any standard.
