Fontainhas

Tiny clifftop village along the coastal path, one of Santo Antão's most photographed views

A tiny village of about 80 people clinging to a ridge between two ravines a couple of kilometres west of Ponta do Sol. There are no roads in or out: you walk along the old coastal path, which winds up and around the cliffs with the Atlantic crashing below. The village itself is a handful of colour-washed houses, a small church, and terraced plots of corn and sugarcane held together by stone walls.

The walk from Ponta do Sol to Fontainhas and on to Cruzinha da Garça is one of the great walks in Cape Verde — about three hours one way, with views that genuinely stop you in your tracks. Wear proper shoes, take water, and start early so you avoid the midday heat.
