Sheltered natural rock pool on the edge of town — the best place to swim

The most popular swimming spot in Ponta do Sol, a sheltered natural pool formed by basalt boulders just outside the town. The volcanic rocks break the Atlantic swell so the pool inside stays calm even on rough days. Locals come here in the late afternoon when the air cools but the rocks are still warm.

It's safer for swimming than the open beaches further along the coast, where currents can be tricky. There's no lifeguard and no facilities — bring water, shoes for the rocks, and watch the swell on windy days.
