Grand Mosque

The Grand Mosque of Abeche is one of the oldest mosques in the Sahel, standing on the original site used by the Ouaddai Kingdom's founders. The current structure was rebuilt in the twentieth century, but its form — mud-brick construction, wooden beams projecting from the walls, a simple minaret — follows the Sudano-Sahelian architectural tradition that connects mosques from Timbuktu to Khartoum.

Non-Muslim visitors are not admitted to the interior, but the exterior is striking and worth seeing. The mosque is most active at prayer times, when the surrounding lanes fill with worshippers. The area around the mosque retains the character of the old city — narrow alleys, low buildings, the smell of wood smoke and incense. This is the historical heart of Abeche, and visiting it gives a sense of how the city was oriented before the French arrived and laid out their colonial quarter.

A story
Islam spread into the central Sahel through trade routes that passed through Ouaddai. The mosque stands on a site that has been a place of worship for as long as the sultanate itself, making it one of the oldest continuously active religious sites in the eastern Sahara.
