Ouara lies a few kilometers southwest of Abeche and was the original capital of the Ouaddai Sultanate before the capital was moved to Abeche. The ruins include the remains of a mosque and the tomb of Sultan Sabun, one of the most celebrated rulers of Ouaddai, who strengthened the kingdom's trade links and repelled numerous incursions in the early nineteenth century. His tomb still stands and is considered a place of local significance.
The site is not developed for tourism and there are no facilities, guides, or marked paths. Access requires a vehicle or a long walk through open ground. The ruins themselves are understated — the landscape has mostly reclaimed the mud-brick structures — but the setting is atmospheric and the historical significance is real. This was a functioning city of consequence before it was abandoned; visiting it requires some imagination, but that is part of the point.
