Emi Koussi is not a destination with attractions in the conventional sense — it is itself the attraction. The summit climb is the primary goal, ascending to 3,445m across volcanic scree and lava fields. The Trou au Natron caldera is the most visually dramatic feature: a vast depression within the main caldera, coloured white and orange by mineral deposits.
Getting here requires a full expedition with 4x4 vehicles, experienced guides, all fuel carried from the south, and satellite communications. The Tibesti rock art sites en route add prehistoric dimension to the landscape. The entire experience is for serious adventurers with expedition experience; it is one of the most challenging and rewarding destinations in Africa.
