Musée Régional de Diosso (Mâ Loango)

Royal residence of the kings of Loango, now a small ethnographic museum

The Mâ Loango regional museum at Diosso sits on the site of the former royal residence of the Vili kings of Loango. The kingdom dominated this stretch of coast from the late 15th century to the colonial period; the museum houses royal regalia, ritual masks, ceremonial sceptres and a series of rooms about the slave trade in which the kingdom was deeply implicated.

It is not a slick institution — opening hours are loose and signage is mostly French — but the collection is genuine and the setting, on the laterite plateau just above the Gorges de Diosso, is striking. Combine with the gorges and Loango Bay for a half-day out of the city.
