Along the lake shore on the Ibanda side, several restaurants line the water with open-air tables and a simple menu built around what comes out of the lake. The signature dish is sambaza — small silvery fish, deep-fried whole and served with chips, fried plantains, and a chilli sauce. Larger tilapia and capitaine are grilled to order and brought to the table on wooden platters.
Service is leisurely. Order a beer (Primus or Mützig, both brewed in DRC) and settle in for the duration. The Coco Lodge and Orchids Safari Club have higher-end versions of the same idea; for a cheaper local experience, look for the cluster of restaurants just south of the cathedral road.
