Bukavu sits at 1,500 metres on the lakeshore and enjoys a more or less constant springlike climate — daytime highs in the low 20s°C, nights cool enough for a jumper. Two wet seasons (March–May and September–November) bring heavy afternoon showers but rarely all-day rain. The driest stretch is June to August, which is also the best time for tracking gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega.
Eastern Congo's security situation changes constantly. Check official advisories, talk to people on the ground (NGOs, the MONUSCO mission), and have an exit plan before you travel. Avoid road trips outside the city without a trusted local fixer.
