Getting Around

Bukavu spreads across five steep peninsulas, so distances feel longer than the map suggests. Motorbike taxis (boda boda) are the workhorses — cheap, fast, and the only way to get up some of the steeper streets. Negotiate the fare before you climb on, and insist on a helmet. Shared minibuses run the main routes (Avenue du Lac, the cathedral road, and out to Kadutu) for a fixed low fare.

For longer journeys or evening transfers, hire a car with driver through your hotel. Walking is enjoyable along the main ridge during the day but stops being a sensible option after dark — keep transport sorted in advance.
