Governor's Residence

The grand late-colonial governor's house on the western point of Bukavu

Built by the Belgians as the residence of the vice-governor of Kivu in the late 1930s, this rambling Mediterranean-influenced villa sits on a wooded headland with views across the lake in three directions. The architecture — white walls, red tile roof, deep loggias — feels transplanted from the Italian Riviera, which is exactly the comparison the Belgians liked to make about Bukavu in those years.

The residence is now used by the provincial governor of South Kivu and is not generally open to the public, but you can walk past on the road that loops the headland and get a decent sense of the building and its setting. Combine it with a walk along the lake shore.
