Kadutu is the largest of Bukavu's three communes and home to the city's biggest market — a sprawling complex of stalls selling fish from Lake Kivu, vegetables from the surrounding hills, second-hand clothing, electronics, and just about anything else. It is loud, crowded, and the best place to see how the city actually feeds itself.
It is also a working market rather than a tourist one: photography needs to be discreet, valuables stay out of sight, and you should ideally come with a local guide. Tuesday and Friday mornings are the busiest. The motorbike taxi (boda boda) rank at the edge of the market is the easiest way to get back to the central ridge.
