Moto-taxis — motorcycle taxis — are the primary way to get around Kananga. They are everywhere, inexpensive, and the only practical option for covering the city's considerable distances with any speed. Negotiate the fare before you get on; there are no meters. For longer or more remote trips, agree a price in advance.
Few roads in Kananga are paved. During the dry season most are passable on a moto; during the rainy season a 4WD vehicle is useful. If you are travelling in the wet season, ask locals about current conditions before heading anywhere that is not the city centre.
Walking is feasible for short distances in the central area, but the city is sprawling and the heat makes long walks taxing.
