Getting There

Getting to Kananga requires patience and flexibility.

By air is the most practical option. CAA (Compagnie Africaine d'Aviation) and a handful of other domestic Congolese carriers operate flights from Kinshasa's N'djili airport. Schedules are irregular, seats are limited, and cancellations are common. Book as far in advance as you can and build buffer days into your plans. The flight takes around two hours when it goes.

Overland from Kinshasa is not a realistic option for most travellers. There is no paved road connection. What roads exist are unpaved and become impassable mud tracks during the rainy season. An overland journey, if attempted, can take several days under good conditions and much longer otherwise.

By river is theoretically possible via the Kasai and Congo river systems, but journeys are very slow — measured in days or weeks — and require local knowledge and significant logistical preparation. This is not a practical tourist route.

Within Kasai, moto-taxis and occasional bush taxis provide local and regional connections.
